How the two disciplines differ and why you should understand the differences.
Many people use the terms “identification” and ” legitimization ” interchangeably. However, these terms are by no means synonymous. They represent crucial processes that everyone who works with documents or is responsible for verifying individuals or granting permissions should understand.
The most important difference right from the start: legitimization can never take place without identification.
Legitimization
Legitimization is simply the proof that a person is allowed to do something. For example, a driver’s license authorizes a person to operate a vehicle. It could also be a certificate of eligibility for an exam.
Identification
Identification, on the other hand, is always about the person themselves, or more specifically, their ID document, which reveals important information about the person. Who is the person? How old are they? Where do they come from? Where do they live? And much more.
Summary
Legitimization grants a person the right to do something, whereas identification ensures that the person is who they claim to be.
